Essential Watch Maintenance Tips You Shouldn’t Ignore
Luxury watches are more than just tools to tell time—they’re precision-engineered, wearable pieces of art. Whether you’re wearing a mechanical timepiece or a quartz model, proper care and maintenance are key to ensuring your watch remains accurate, functional, and beautiful for years to come.
At AG Watch Repair Center, we’ve handled thousands of watch repairs in Hong Kong, and we know firsthand that regular maintenance can make all the difference. Below are three crucial areas of everyday watch care that every owner should know.
1. Water Resistance & Sealing Maintenance
While most modern watches come with water resistance features, they are not designed for high-temperature environments such as saunas or hot showers. Exposure to heat causes the rubber sealing gaskets (that keep water out) to expand and contract. This allows hot air to seep in, creating condensation under the crystal, which can lead to corrosion and rust.
Over time, these gaskets also age and lose their elasticity, creating small gaps that allow moisture or air to enter. The solution? Regularly replace the gaskets to maintain your watch’s waterproof performance and protect the delicate internal components.

2. Lubrication and Mechanical Servicing
Mechanical watches rely on a series of precision-engineered gears, some of which rotate tens of thousands of times per day. Many of these components are fitted with synthetic rubies (jewels) to reduce friction, but the oil inside these jewels is essential to minimize wear.
As the lubrication dries out or degrades over time, the gear shafts begin to grind against the jewel settings, leading to damage, reduced power reserve, and poor timekeeping accuracy. To prevent this, we recommend a complete lubrication service every 3 to 5 years.
At AG Watch Repair Center, we fully disassemble the movement, clean and re-oil every part, and reassemble with meticulous care—restoring your timepiece to optimal condition.

3. Exterior Care: Case, Strap & Finishing
Luxury watches often use materials like 18K gold, white gold, and stainless steel, each with its own care requirements:
- 18K Yellow Gold contains 75% pure gold and is vulnerable to oxidation from sweat and air. Regular cleaning and polishing are essential to keep it looking new.
- 18K White Gold is typically coated with a silvery rhodium layer to enhance its brightness. Over time, this layer wears off, exposing the duller gold beneath. Periodic re-plating can restore its shine.
- Stainless Steel is more durable and easier to maintain. Polishing and refinishing can easily remove scratches and signs of wear.
- Leather Straps require special care. To avoid cracking or hardening, don’t wear your watch in the rain or while sweating heavily. Store it in a dry, cool place when not in use.
