Understanding Sapphire Crystal Glass: Durable, Not Indestructible
Understanding Sapphire Crystal Glass: Durable, Not Indestructible
Sapphire crystal glass is a common feature in luxury watches—and for good reason. Known for its excellent clarity and resistance to scratches, it offers a level of durability that most other materials simply can’t match. But while sapphire crystal is scratch-resistant, it’s important to understand that it is not scratch-proof, and certainly not shatterproof.
What Is Sapphire Crystal Glass?
Sapphire crystal is a synthetic material created through high-pressure, high-temperature processes. The result is a highly compressed, clear crystal with impressive density and hardness. This makes it ideal for watch faces, as it resists everyday scuffs and scratches far better than mineral or acrylic glass.
The Hidden Drawback: Brittleness
However, this hardness comes with a trade-off: brittleness. Like diamonds, which are incredibly hard yet can chip under pressure, sapphire crystal is vulnerable to impact. A drop onto a hard surface, sudden heavy pressure, or a sharp hit can cause the glass to crack or shatter.
In other words, the tougher the material, the less flexible it becomes. So while sapphire crystal can take on scratches from keys or coins in your pocket, it’s still not immune to accidents.
How to Protect Your Watch
Under normal daily wear, a sapphire crystal watch face is more than sufficient to withstand the elements. But if you’re someone who leads an active lifestyle or tends to knock your wrist frequently, it’s essential to wear your watch with care:
- Avoid dropping your watch on hard floors
- Refrain from exposing it to sudden impact or pressure
- Consider removing your watch during rigorous physical activities
